STAVE & HEADING MILL OPERATIONS

The factory bought bolts from the farmers and loggers in the area. The bolts were then sawed into staves (the walls of barrels) and heads (the tops and bottoms of barrels).

The 'heads' of barrels are actually made from a number of small boards which are joined by dowels. You cut the whole thing into a circle and fit it into the groove cut into the wall of the barrel. This grove is called a croze.

I watched a cooper make a small cask at Williamsburg one rainy afternoon. In about three hours he had a watertight container that would hold about two gallons. It was very impressive. Were I to try it, I'd wind up with about 3,000,000,000 toothpicks and very wet feet!

Best regards
