Walters, Catherine E. (25 Mar 1845 - 14 Sep 1911)

At 12:30 p.m. on Sept. 14, 1911, at her home just east of the city (Neillsville, Clark Co.), Mrs. C.E. Walters, one of the pioneer residents of this place, passed from this life, her death being caused by pneumonia.

Catherine E. Cushing was born in Chester County, England, March 25, 1845, and came to America when 18 years of age, living with relatives in Montreal and Kingston, Canada. Later she came to Wisconsin, again living with relatives in Milwaukee and Sparta, and finally through acquaintance with the Stafford family four her way to Clark County. At Staffordville she met John Walters, whom she married, and with whom she lived for twelve happy years. Five children were born to them, three of who survive, a son having died in infancy and a daughter on the portal of young womanhood. Shortly after the death of her husband, Mrs. Walters moved her family to the home which she has made one of the beautiful places of the country. Here, with untiring zeal and energy she gives her life to the rearing and educating of her children; here she saw them grow to womanhood, and here, with them beside her, she closed her eyes forever to the cares of this world.

Mrs. Walters was a true friend, a kind neighbor and a devoted wife and mother. Her virtue, her honesty, her generosity and her sunny disposition and staunch devotion to her family and home won for her the admiration of all who knew her.

For the past few years her health had been failing, and in Jun of this year she went to the hospital in the hope of regaining it. She successfully underwent a severe operation and it appeared was on the road to recovery when pneumonia fastened itself upon her. She had been able to be about, having attended the county fair and seen many of her old acquaintances and friends, to whom the news of her death came as a shock.

She is survived by her three daughters, Mrs. Geo. Larsen, Mrs. Louis Buddenhagen, and Miss Julia Walters, all of Neillsville, her brothers, John Cushing of Sharon, Pa., and David Cushing of Wilson, Wis., and her sister, Mrs. S. Welsh of Wishek, N.D.

The funeral services, held Monday at 2:30 p.m. in the home, where she, over shadowed by beautiful plants raised by her own tender care, amid a profusion of flowers, and surrounded by her dear ones and many sorrowing friends, all that was earthly of this noble woman lay, while Rev. Burrows conducted the last sad rites. Those from out of town who attended the funeral were Mrs. S. Welsh and son James of Wishek, N.D., Mrs. H. Cooley of Whitehall, Wis., David Cushing and son James of Wilson, Wis., and David Cushing, Jr. of Biwabik, Minn.

The daughters wish to thank all the neighbors who gave their help and sympathy during their mother’s sickness, death and burial. They especially thank those who brought flowers, and assisted in lining the grave; also they would remember the kindness of the Royal Neighbors.
