Tucker, Martha A. (19 Jul 1851 - 13 OCT 1924)

Martha Ann Butler, daughter of Sarah and Zacheus Butler, was born July 19, 1851, at Greenbush, Sheboygan Co., Wis. She attended district school, also select school in Fond du Lac Co. She was one of a family of seven children. Those surviving are one sister, Mrs. Catherine Hastings of Tacoma, Wash., and three brothers, namely Henry Butler of Mellen, Wis., and Charles and Allie Butler of Marshfield, Wis. She was united in marriage to Austin H. Tucker July 4, 1871, at Greenbush, Wis. To this union were born two children, Edgar H. Tucker of Lodi, Wis., and Mrs. Kathryn Hales of Poynette, Wis. Mrs. Effie E. Lindley, now of Hastings, Neb., niece of the deceased, at the age of four years came to this family and remained the greater part of her life until her marriage. She also leaves 4 grandchildren, Charles and La Verne Tucker and Myron and David Hales. One niece Birdine Tucker preceded her in death, in May 1923.

After her marriage, they lived in Trempealeau Co., later moving to Clark County, where the greater part of her middle life was spent, in 1912 moving to Lodi to be near their children in their declining years. On Easter Sunday 1918 she became a member of the Lodi M. E. Church and remained a faithful member until her death.

After her husband's death in August 1921, she divided her time between her son and daughter; during the past 6 months she had lived alone at Poynette, spending most of her time with her daughter, where she suddenly passed away at 10:30 a.m., Oct. 13, 1924.

Short services were held at P. W. Hales home at Poynette, followed by services at the M. E. Church at Lodi, and she was laid to rest beside her husband in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. The pallbearers and singers were Lodi friends. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Jeffery, assisted by Rev. Graves of Poynette.

Those attending the services from away were henry Butler of Mellen, Wis., Charles and A. J. Butler and wives of Marshfield, and Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Dodge of Lake Mills, Wis.
