Barton, Anton (1 March 1852 - 18 June 1925)

Anton Barton, one of the older residents of Neillsville, died suddenly at his home Thursday forenoon, June 18, heart failure being the cause of his death. A singular co-incidence of his death was the fact that his brother, Joe Barton, died a year and four days previously in almost the same manner.

Anton Barton was born in Canada, March 1, 1852. He came to Neillsville in 1871, and soon after went into business here in a blacksmith and wagon shop. He was an excellent workman and a good business man and soon established a prosperous business.

In 1872 he was married to Miss Josephine Benware, who died in 1893. In 1894 he was married to Mrs. Mary Benware, who survives him. In 1907 they moved to British Columbia, living there until 1910 when they returned to make Neillsville their home until his death. Although he was the owner of a farm for some time he never followed farming as an active occupation. He was a genial pleasant man, and made friends readily among his patrons, and all others who made his acquaintance. Beside his wife, he is survived by four children, all of his first marriage. Edward Devere Barton of Canyon City, Colorado; Belle, Mrs. L. N. Williams, Dewitt, Iowa; Mrs. R. W. De Lion, Spokane, Wash.; John Barton, Jamestown, North Dakota. One son Henry, is deceased. He leaves also ten grandchildren; one sister is left, living at Ottawa, Canada.

Funeral services were held at St. Mary’s Catholic church Monday forenoon, Rev. P. Weber officiating.

All of the children were here for the funeral except Mrs. De Lion, who was unable to come.
