Morse, Sidney E. (5 Sept. 1851 - 1 Sept. 1925)

Sidney E. Morse one of the oldest residents of this county passed away at his home in this city early Tuesday morning, Sept. 1, age nearly 74 years. His health had been declining for some time, and he gradually grew weaker till the end came.

Sidney Morse was born on a farm in New York State Sept. 5, 1851, being a son of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. W. Morse. He grew up there on the farm and when 17 years of age came with his parents to this county. His father bought land about eight miles north of Neillsville, near Christie. Here Sidney worked at clearing land on this father’s farm and is logging camps in the winter time, for several years. On Feb. 29, 1874 he was married to Miss Julia Jones. They settled on the home farm, and the father Geo. W. Morse having died Sidney bought the place and developed it into one of the finest farms on the Greenwood road. He erected a fine brick house and good barn, silo and other out buildings. He was successful farmer and stock raiser and had one of the best orchards in the county. He took an active part in public affairs, and served several years as school district treasurer, and as town officer served as town treasurer, clerk, assessor and supervisor. He was a man of sterling character, a helpful neighbor, a kind husband and father and a good man in the community. He was also a faithful member of the Methodist Church.

He is survived by his aged wife and two sons and three daughters: Alonzo on the home farm, Orson in Oregon; Mrs. Mary Sischo, Salem, Ore.; Mrs. Grace West, Christie; and Mrs. Olive Kelch, Abbotsford. He leaves a half-brother, Haven F. Morse of Portland, Oregon and a half-sister, Mrs. Bessie Sischo of Greenwood, also 15 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. The funeral will be held at the Methodist Church Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock, Rev. Wm. Walder officiating.
