Davis, Solon (21 JUN 1849 - 13 Apr 1927)

Solon Davis, one of the pioneers of Clark County, Wis., passed away at his home in the town of York, April 13, 1927.

He was born near Potsdam, N.Y., June 21, 1849, and grew to manhood there. In Sept. 1873 he came to Wisconsin with other pioneers from his community. He was a man of great physical strength and industry, and worked in lumber camps winters and cleared land during the summer until he bought the land which he developed into a good farm, and which remained his home the rest of his life. To Mr. Davis and men of his type is due great credit for the growth and development of this county. They helped to harvest the first crop in this region, the timer, and later cleared the land, contributing to the prosperity of all lines of business….(the rest of my copy was cut off)

Solon and Sarah Ann (Smith) Davis

Mr. and Mrs. Davis were early pioneers of Clark county.  Solon was born in Potsdam, New York, and grew to manhood there. He was the son of Daniel R. and Mariah Glidden Davis. In September, 1873, he came to Wisconsin with other pioneers from his community. He purchased 40 acres of wild timber land seven miles northeast of Neillsville, for $700. In 1885, he purchased 40 more acres with some improvements for the sum of $1, 500. Of this sum he borrowed $1, 200.

During the winter, Mr. Davis worked in lumber camps, and in the summer, he worked clearing his land. In 1883, he married Sarah Ann Smith, who was born in Hinchis Brook, Ontario, Canada. At the age of six, she had come with her'• parents to Black River Falls where they lived a few years before going to Clark County, settling on a farm northeast of Greenwood. She lived here until her marriage to Mr. Davis, when they settled on Mr. Davis's farm.

Mr. Davis put all his attention to his dairy herd, using a hand separator to separate the milk. He shipped butter to commission houses where he received eight cents more a pound, over local prices. Mr. Davis also raised hogs and from the sale of butter and hogs, made the last payment on his farm in 1893. Later, he purchased 20 more acres of timber land, thus making him a fine farm of 120 acres.

Seven children were born to this union: Calvin, married to Lottie Berg, daughter of Carl and Amelia Berg; Asenath, married to Dale Lee, son of Fisk and Mary Lee; Ora; Mariah, married Ray Mortimer, son of William and Estella Mortimer; Florence, married to Freeman Fox; Smith, married to Vivian MacDonald; and Rose, who died in infancy.
