Blakely, Alonzo M. (5 Apr 1849 - 10 Jul 1928)

Alonzo Merrick Blakely was born at Springville, N.Y., April 5, 1849, and died at his home in the town of Sherwood, Clark County, Wis., July 10, 1928.

When about 10 years of age he moved with his parents to Pine River, Waushara, Co., Wis., where he resided several years. He was married there to Miss Ellen Sexton in 1871. Four children were born to this union: Allie, Jay, Verne and Harry. He came to Wood Co., settling near Pittsville, where he held the office of town clerk for several years. In 1892 he moved to Lindsey, Wis., conducting a hardware store on a small scale and also took an active part as a member of the school board in striving to make good schools.

After 25 years of wedded life the home was divided through divorce and in 1896 he was married to Miss Bertha Grobe. To this union three children were born: Alvin, Edgar and Ruth. In 1917 he moved to Sherwood, his present home, where after a six months struggle with cardiac dropsy he passed away. He leaves to mourn his demise, his wife and son Edgar, Mrs. Robert Hightower, Verne Blakely of Fond du Lac and Harry of California. Three of his children preceded him in death some years ago. He was laid to rest in the Sherwood Cemetery, where funeral services were conducted at the hall Friday afternoon. Elder Olmstead of Bethel conducting the services. He was also a charter member of the Lindsey MWA camp.

The pallbearers were Fred Seltrich, Ole Larson, John Paun, Tom Paun, Steve Rosandisch and Joseph Matanish.

Those from away who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Verne Blakely and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hightower of Fond du Lac; Mr. and Mrs. Enos Cleveland children of Bethel, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Dawes, Mrs. L. Dawes and Will Hannah of Pittsville.
