Roehl Family, Herman F.

Herman Frederick Roehl, a farmer of Fremont Township, Clark County, Wis., was born in Jefferson Co., Wis. on May 13, 1882, son of Carl and Justine Roehl. His parents came to Jefferson Co. from Germany. Herman's two sisters, Gustie and Anna, were born in Germany. Their voyage to America was made in a slow sailing vessel and lasted six weeks. They settled in Jefferson Co., and Carl worked for a farmer. During the period 1882-89 Herman, Ida and William were born.

About 1905, Herman and his parents moved from lake Mills, Jefferson Co. to Clark County. Here they settle in Granton, Wis. on the Davis farm (just north of the high school). Here his youngest brother Frank was born. Herman had four sisters and two brothers (Elsie died at an early age). It was during the period when he was residing at home that the old Granton Grade School was being built. Herman, now a young man and out of school, worked hauling cement blocks with his horses and wagon for the school.

He was united in marriage Feb. 20, 1908 to Clara Anna Ackerman of Granton, Wis. Clara was born in Grant Township, Clark County, May 27, 1887, a daughter of Ed and Emma Scheel Ackerman of Granton, Wis., who came from Sheboygan. Clara attended the Wild Rose School in Grant Township. After their marriage, Herman and Clara moved into a log house on 80 acres in Section 19, York Township. Here in the middle of the winter their first son Glenn was born Jan. 20, 1909. Horses and sleigh were used to summon Grandma Ackerman and Dr. Rath. That same winter fire destroyed their log house. In early 1910, they moved into Granton. Here he worked at the P. J. Kemmeter Heading Mill making a living fo rhis family. On July 5 their first daughter Vera was born.

Without stopping there long, he began farming at Chili on the Kosher farm, now known as the Bill Stichert farm, where he rented for a few years. Here his second son Alvin was born May 1913. While renting the Kosher farm he finally found 40 acres in Section 17, Fremont Township which he bought. This was a tract of partly improved land with some buildings on it. Driving out to his new "forty" with horses and buggy to work at clearing the land, he finally cleared and improved his farm so that he could move there permanently. In time, he got the 40 acres entirely cleared of stumps, and this was their home.

He and his wife had ten children who were all born and reared in Clark County. They were:

Glenn - he married Naomi Foemmel. Resides in Marshfield, Wis. they have seven children, Vivian, Arvilla, Everett, Kenneth, Delores, Harland, and Dinah.

Vera - who married Artie Levanduske (killed May 11, 1941). They had two girls, Wileen and Velda. Later Vera married William Carstensen, and they reside in Neillsville.

Alvin - he married Evelyn Sanger. They reside in Fremont Township. They have four children, Sharlyn, Marlene, Lavern, and Bernette.

Russell - he married Frieda Nebel, and resided in Loyal Township (was killed on April 16, 1963). They had four children, Lowell, Elgin, Erlin, and Kathleen.

Walter - he married Verna Gaulke (who died in 1972). They had three children, Jerold, Janice, and Gene. He resides in Lynn Township.

Carl - who married Delma Stuhr. They live in Fremont Township. They have one daughter, Carol.

Leo - who married Gerald Nelson. They live in Spencer, Wis.

Evelyn - who died at the age of 34.

They all received their grad school education at the "Cozy Corner School," District No. 8, Fremont Township, which was located across from the Roehl farm.

After his death, which was due to cancer, on June 1, 1943, his youngest son Leo worked the farm with his mother and two sisters, Lila and Evelyn; until 1947 when she sold the farm to Albert Lindow, but kept an acre of land and the house which she lived in until 1954 when she moved into the former Glenn Snow house in Chili, where she is living at present. She is a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Chili.
