Johnson, Mattie (17 April 1849 - 17 Oct. 1930)

Mrs. Ole Johnson passed away Friday, Oct. 17, at 3 p.m. at her home in the town of Levis. Mrs. Johnson was born Mattie Enckhaus, April 17, 1849, in Norway, and came to this country with her husband and four children in 1878, setting in the town of Levis, which continued to be her home until her death.

Mr. and Mrs. Johnson were of the pioneer stock, coming into this country when it was sparsely settled and settled in the midst of the forest. Mr. Johnson built a log cabin, which was later remodeled into a more modern house; it still remains the family home. Here all the hardships, comforts and discomfort of the pioneer were experienced, and here Mr. and Mrs. Johnson reared their eight children.

Mrs. Johnson had been a patient sufferer for the last four years, up to that time doing the work for her husband and herself and son Mike. Always a good mother, a helpful neighbor, a kind and devoted woman, she will be greatly missed by all whom she has been in connection with for many years. She leaves besides her aged husband, six children; John and Mike of Levis, Free of Centralia, Wash.; Jennie, Mrs. Geo. Braman of Los Angeles, Calif.; Anna, Mrs. Dan Brisb??s, of Klamath Falls, Oregon; and Tillie, Mrs. Richard Lynch of Levis. Two children preceded their mother in death: Ole in 1904 at the age of 28 and Minnie, Mrs. Harry Scranton of Centria, Wash., in 1910. She leaves 12 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren and two sisters at Perley, Minn.

The funeral took place Monday afternoon from the Lowe Funeral home with Rev. G. W. Longenecker officiating. Burial was in the Dells Dam cemetery. The pall bearers, all old neighbors of the deceased, were August Anderson, Victor Horton, Wm. Stoffel, Will Horton, Tom Powell and Robert French.
