Svirnoff, Harry (10 March 1880 - 22 Dec. 1930)

Harry Svirnoff, one of Neillsville’s most active business men, died suddenly Monday evening, Dec. 22, while at the farm home of William Oldham in Pine Valley. Mr. Svirnoff had gone out to Mr. Oldham’s on a matter of business. Starting for home he had reached quite a steep, icy hill on the highway, and not having chains on his car, he could not get up the grade. After repeated trials, and not being able to turn the car around, he walked back to Oldham’s, a distance of nearly half a mile, to obtain a team, to haul the car up the hill. While the boys were getting the team, Mr. Svirnoff was invited into the house, and while sitting chatting with the family, his head suddenly dropped on this chest and he became unconscious. Dr. Housley was immediately called, but Mr. Svirnoff was dead before the ambulance was summoned and the body brought back to the city.

Mr. Svirnoff had apparently been in the best of health and had the appearance of being a very vigorous man. His death came as a sad blow to his family and a shock to the whole community. For many years Mr. Svirnoff has been in business here, has brought and sold horses, cattle and dealt in many ways, and both here and in the country around was looked upon as a man, not only of enterprise, but of upright and honest principles. He was a kind husband and good father and will be deeply mourned in the home.

Harry Svirnoff was born in Russia March 10, 1880, and came to America when he was about 20 years of age. He had a keen intellect and readily adapted himself to American life. Twenty-eight years ago he was married in Neillsville to Miss Bertha Cohen. Except two years residence in New York City, Neillsville has been their home since their marriage.

Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Isadore E. and Morris B. young men at home. Another son died in infancy. Mrs. Svirnoff, who has been very ill for several weeks, is much overcome by her husband’s death. Deceased leaves also two sisters and a brother in New York.

Mrs. Svirnoff has relatives in Minneapolis and the body was taken to that city Tuesday for burial; the family and other Neillsville relatives motored through, Melvin Ure and Louis Bradbury accompanying them to drive the cars.
