Hantke, Amelia (27 Oct. 1845 - 9 July 1931)

A long and useful life closed Thursday, July 9, when Mrs. Amelia Hantke passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. H. *Kuechenmeiseter on South Grand Avenue.

She was 85 years of age on Oct. 27, 1930, at which time the event was celebrated by a family reunion at the *Kuechenmeister home. Her strength has been slowly failing for some months past.

Amelia Thrun was born in Germany, Oct. 27, 1854. At the age of 12 she came to America with her mother and step-father, Mr. *Sheldach, the family settling for a time in Milwaukee. They then moved to LaCrosse, where she grew to womanhood and was married to Ernest Hantke in 1864. In the fall of 1873 they moved to Clark County with their four children, coming part of the way by train, unloading their ox team, household goods, wagon, sleigh, etc. at Black River Falls, then the terminus of the railroad. They came through the trail to the town of Grant where Mr. Hantke had brought some wild land. A shanty was built which was the family home for several years, mean while a time went on the land was cleared and the home improved. Like most of the pioneer women of her day, Mrs. Hantke took a helpful part in the development of the home, the care of the family, and in neighborhood affairs where help was needed. Although she had never lived under pioneer conditions, she quickly adapted herself to her new surrounding and learned to fine pleasures in them.

During her long life she has known a wide range of life’s joys and sorrows, and has faced with courage her many problems. Mr. Hantke died about 40 years ago. A daughter, Mrs. Sam Cook, died in December, ***rest of the paragraph is cut off. ***beginning of this paragraph is cut off..........and niece, of Chaseburg, Wis.; Oscar Hantke (son) of Mercer, Wis.; Mrs. Ira Slocomb (granddaughter), Dan Hughes, Miss Marian Hantke (granddaughter) of Menomonie, Wis.; Mr. And Mrs. Fred *Schaldach, Jr. of La Crescent, Minn.; Mrs. Anna Peters, Mrs. Ida Brinkman; Mrs. Elsie Krause, Mr. and Mrs. Brinkman, Herman *Schaldach, Sr. (brother) of LaCrosse; Mr. and Mrs. George *Schaldach of Madison.

*Note the two different spellings of these two surnames, left them the way they were typed in the obituary.
