Stremikis, August P. (28 Augl 1905 - 15 Jan 2005)

August P. Stremikis, 99, Osseo, formerly of Willard, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Eau Claire. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 19, at Cuddie Funeral Home, Greenwood. His daughter, the Rev. Carla Grabanski officiated. Burial followed in the Willard Cemetery. Pallbearers were Joe Spiegel, Randy Krause, David Schlegel, Jerome Stremikis, James Gilbertson, George Gilbertson and Leonard Gilbertson.

August P. Stremikis was born on Aug. 28, 1905, in Waukegan, Ill., to August and Anna [nee Valencius] Stremikis. At an early age, his family moved to Lincoln, Ill., where he was raised and attended Lincoln High School. Later, his family moved to Willard, where he worked on the family farm. He married Mary Alice Bergant on Jan. 20, 1930, in Gary, Ind. They resided in Gary, where he was employed in the steel mills. They moved back to the Willard area, and bought land that he cleared to build a farm. He also worked as a welder, helping to build numerous bridges in the area. After retiring from farming, he and his wife enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family. His wife died on Oct. 28, 1994. In 2000, he moved to the senior apartments in Osseo, to be near his daughter, Jeanette, and enjoyed his many new friends and all the activities of the facility. He enjoyed good health until recently, and played bingo the day before he died. Besides being a lifelong dairy farmer, he had many interests including playing softball, trapping, fishing and deer hunting. He was active in local and county government, having served at various times as clerk, supervisor and chairman of the town of Foster, and was a member of Clark County Board. He also served many years as a director and president of the Clark Electric Cooperative, was on the board of Warner Mutual, Greenwood, was an emergency fire warden, served on the Fairfield School Board and was the first treasurer of the Consolidated Osseo-Fairfield Schools, was active in the Slovenian SNPJ Lodge #198 in Willard, having served as president and a national delegate several times and was co-leader of the youth group.

Survivors include two daughters, Jeanette Berg, Strum, and Virginia [Vernon] Gilbertson, Chili; seven grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; four nephews; and one niece.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Mary; three brothers, Anthony, Jerome and Charles; one sister, Katherine Morton; one son-in-law, Perry Berg; and one nephew.

Cuddie Funeral Home, Greenwood, assisted the family with arrangements.
