Grether, David (15 JUL 1889 - 21 MAY 1945)

Colby, Clark County, Wis. - The Rev. David Grether, 55, pastor of First Evangelical and Reformed Church in Colby, Wisconsin, died suddenly at 5:30 o’clock this morning at his home in Colby, the result of a heart attack. He had not been seriously ill, and yesterday had conducted his regular church duties.

The body will be in state at the Lulloff Funeral Home in Colby until funeral arrangements can be made. Interment will take place in Black River Falls.

The Rev. Mr. Grether was born in Poland, Ind., July 15, 1889, and received his education at Mission House College, Plymouth, graduating from there in 1915. On Aug. 30 the following year he was married at Black River Falls to Anna Marie Stucki.

After his graduation he served at Neillsville nine years, then spent 17 years at Magley, Ind., before coming to Colby in the fall of 1942 to assume the pastorship of the Evangelical and Reformed Church.

Surviving besides his widow are five children, the Rev. William J. Grether, Delmont, S. D.; Lt. David Frank Grether with the U. S. Navy in the Pacific; Mrs. Calvin (Marie) Stuehbe, Schaller, Iowa; Mrs. Albert (Ruth) Gress, Dayton, Ohio; and Miss Grace Grether, Milwaukee.

Also surviving are his mother, Mrs. William Grether, Loveland, Colo.; four sisters, Miss Helen Grether, Berkeley, Calif.; Miss Joan Grether, Loveland, Colo.; Miss Eulalia Grether, a returned missionary from Egypt, now of California; and Mrs. Doris Woelfle, Loveland, Colo.; and two brothers, Mark Grether, Fort Collins, Colo., and Ewald Grether, Berkeley, Calif.
