Black, Betsey (1838 - 5 JUN 1916)

Betsey Black, whose maiden name was Betsey Ritchie, was born in St. Lawrence Co., N.Y. in 1838, and came to Jefferson Co., Wis., with her parents when a small girl. She was married in Jefferson County to Wm. Black. One daughter was born to them, who later became the wife of John Sayle, and is now deceased. After Wm. Black’s death, Mrs. Black came to Clark County in 1869 to be with his father, and after his death she kept huse for some time for her brother Will Ritchie in the town of Weston. Later for several years shed lived at Lake Mills and made her home with her brother-in-law, George Black and family. A year ago last winter she came to Neillsville and spent several months, returning again to Lake Mills. About six weeks ago she went to Hayward to visit her grandson Joel Sayle, and there was taken sick, and died June 5, 1916, aged 78 years. Her remains were taken to Lake Mills for burial, her nephew Robert Ritchie of Independence, Iowa, accompanied them back to Lake Mills.

Mrs. Black was a woman of exceptional beautiful traits of character. "Aunt Betsey" as she was known in later years was the good friend of everyone near her who needed a friends. A sweet, lovable character, one theat made its impress on all who met her, her life has left a strong wholesome influence in the world.
