Marshall, Mary (28 FEB 1852 - 22 Augl 1910)

The Hamline County Journal published at Castlewood, S.D. contained the following, which was taken from the obituary of Mary Shanks.

"Mary Shanks was born in Middle Sex Co., Province of Ontario, Canada, Feb. 28, 1852 and died at Castlewood, S.D., Aug. 22, 1910, at the age of 58 years, 5 months and 24 days. At the early age of seventeen she married William Marshall at Port Huron, Michigan, Sept. 27, 1869, the young people going to Greenwood, Clark County, Wis. for their home building. In 1879 they removed to South Dakota, settling about two miles west of the present site of Castlewood, in what was at that time the unorganized county of Hamline. Much of the early life of the deceased was spent in pioneering, but it is nearly always true that those experiences enable one to endure as a good soldier, and it was none the less true in this instance.
