Hawley, John (12 FEB 1868 - 25 Dec 1934)

Though not in the best of health, the village and community was shocked Christmas night to hear of the death of John Hawley, who passed away very suddenly at his home at eight o’clock, after spending a Happy Christmas with his family.

John Lucius Hawley was born in Oshkosh Feb. 12, 1868 and grew to manhood in that vicinity. On Jan. 1, 1893 he was married to Lena Dutcher of Stockbridge, Wis., who survives him. He is also survived by four children, Irene, Mrs. Ernest Hannah, Mr. Dale Hawley and Mr. Milton Hawley, all of Greenwood and Marjorie, Mrs. Cyril Neverman of Tomahawk, Wis. There are 13 grandchildren, also two sisters, Mrs. L. Treutel of Wausau, Wis. and Mrs. Earl Hendrickson of Moline, Ill.

In 1900 he came to Clark County, Wis. and settled on a farm in the Town of Weston where he resided nineteen years, when he moved onto a farm in the town of Loyal, living there until coming to Greenwood in 1930, where he has since resided.

He was connected with the Modern Woodmen Lodge, of which he has been a member since 1910.

Mr. Hawley was most successful in his business, which was farming. He was of a kindly genial temperament and a friend and neighbor to all who knew him. He will be greatly missed in the village and community.

The funeral was held at his home Saturday afternoon, Dec. 29th, and burial was made in the Greenwood Cemetery, Rev. Glenn Shanks officiating.

Those from out of town attending were Mrs. H.W. Hoffman, Stockbridge, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. Louis Treutel of Wausau, Wis.; Mrs. W.M. Weisgerber of Oshkosh, Wis., and Mrs. Mary J. Bourne of Sparta, Wis.
