Frantz, George (8 JUL 1828 - 12 Sep 1920)

George Frantz, one of the oldest residents of Clark County, Wis., passed away Sunday morning, Sept, 12, 1920, at the home of his son Rudolph in this city, aged 92 years, 3 months and 4 days. Deceased was born at Sarbrucken, Prussia, July 8, 1828, being the son of Conrad and Julia (Brur) Frantz. His parents died in Germany and he was the only one of their five children to come to America. At the age of 18 he landed in New York and came west, stopping a Ft. Atkinson, Wis., to work on a farm. Later he came to Black River Falls, then to Clark County in 1848, working her at making shingles and other pioneer occupations. He secured land in the town of Pine Valley, now known as the Gus Borde farm. There he built a log house, later returning to Jefferson Co., where on Nov. 15, 1855 he was married to Barbara Sontag. They came through the wilderness with an ox team and covered wagon. On arriving here he found his house had burned down. They found employment in a logging camp, Mr. Frantz driving an ox team and his wife cooking for the crew. In spring he built a small log house on his land. Here they went through all the pioneer experiences and hardships. For many years Mr. Frantz took a prominent part in local affairs. About 1883 Mr. Frantz moved to the town of Washburn, where he developed the farm now owned by his son Rudolph. Here he and his wife resided until Oct. 1917, when they moved to Neillsville. Both on the fiftieth and sixtieth anniversary of the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Frantz, there was a large gathering of relatives and friends at their home to commemorate their wedding. His declining years have been spent in quiet at his son’s home, his aged wife still quite well and strong, helping to cheer his last days. He elaves four sons: Conrad, George L., Henry and Rudolph. Five children are deceased: Julia and Frederick died when young; Minnie at the age of 29, and David when 15; Sophia, wife of George Becker of Ft. Atkinson is also deceased. He leaves also a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at the home, Rev. D. Grether officiating.
