Taplin, William W. (14 Feb 1845 - 17 Jul 1917)

William W. Taplin, whose death was mentioned last week, died at Rib Lake, Wis., July 17, 1917. He was born Feb. 14, 1845 in Canada, being the son of Hiram and Lucinda Taplin. He graduated from high school at the age of 18. From boyhood he had worked with his father in the millwright and carriage business.

After finishing school he went to Detroit and worked as a machinist in a mill, from there going to Lucas, Ohio. At the close of the war he went to Saginaw, Mich., where he worked for a time, later helping to erect mills in different places in Indiana and Ohio. In 1867 he returned to Canada and worked in a machine shop, coming to Port Washington, Wis. in 1876, where for a time he manufactured sewing machines. In 1881 he came to Neillsville, Clark County, Wis. and establish a foundry and machine shop, which he operated many years. He was the inventor and manufacturer of saw-gummer and other machines which were very successful and were put upon the market, finding a wide sale.

About two years ago Mr. Taplin moved to Rib Lake, although he continued to own his residence here.

In 1869 Mr. Taplin was married to Miss Adelia Brundage, who survives him. He leaves three children to mourn his death: Mrs. Fred bullard of Rib Lake, a son Frank in Kansas and a son Neil in Grand Rapids, Mich. A nephew, Wm. Brundage of Milwaukee, was brought up as one of the family.

Mr. Taplin was a man of the most lovable character. He was always a student, not alone along lines of mechanics, but in many phases of philosophy. He was a fine type of the gentleman, in the best sense of that term. Many in Neillsville and vicinity will mourn his death.

The funeral was held at the Presbyterian Church Friday afternoon under the auspices of the Masonic Lodge, Rev. S.B. Pinney assisting also in the services.
