MacBride, Adelaide J. (15 Apr 1849 - 26 Mar 1918)

Mrs. R. J. MacBride died March 26, 1918 at the home of her son Oscar, 764 Clara Av., St. Louis, Mo., where she and Mr. MacBride spent the winter. Mrs. MacBride had been in failing health for some time before her death, and in her son's home she was given the filial care so much needed as her strength declined.

Mrs. MacBride, whose maiden name was Adelaide J. Gates, was born in Essex Co., N.Y., April 15, 1849. She came with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Gates, to Clark County, Wis. when she was a small girl. For a time the family lived at the mouth of Wedges Creek and there she and her brother James attended a pioneer school. Later they moved to Neillsville, the father, Daniel Gates, becoming prominent in the early development of this city.

Mrs. MacBride's entire life May be said to be a part of this community. She lived through its various phases of development and took an active part in its social and other activities. Completing her course in the village school she became a teacher, and after her marriage to Robert J. MacBride Jun 28, 1870, they established their home here and became prominently identified in the affairs of this community.

She accompanied Mr. MacBride to Scotland and remained with him there for some time when he served as U.S. Consul at Leith (Edinburgh) by appointment of President Cleveland. During her husband's term as State Senator she spent some time at Madison and acquired a wide circle of friends in the state.

She was skilled too in the practical affairs of life and looked carefully tot he welfare of her home and family. Her death leaves another vacancy in the ranks of Neillsville's pioneers, and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

She leaves her husband, two sons, Oscar at St. Louis and Robert in Oregon; two grandsons, La Mont and Douglas MacBride, seniors in Neillsville High School; one granddaughter, Mrs. Beatrice Godwin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar MacBride; she also has a daughter, a great-grandchild of deceased. She leaves also two brothers, Charles and Edwin H. Gates of this city.

Funeral services were held at the MacBride home last Thursday, Rev. G.W. Longenecker officiating.
