Hutchings, S. E. (24 Jun 1839 - 26 Jan 1920)

News reached here Monday that S. E. Hutchings was dead at Los Angeles, Cal., where he and his family went a few years ago. Mr. Hutchings was one of the pioneers of this community and lived for many years at "Hutchings Corners", four miles south of this city (Neillsville, Clark County, Wis.) He took a prominent part in public affairs here, being chairman and town clerk in Pine Valley many terms and active in all affairs to promote the welfare of the community. For some time of late he has been an invalid. He leaves his wife, one son, John Hutchings, and two daughters, Mrs. J. W. McAdams, and Miss Mamie Hutchings, all living in Los Angeles.

Samuel E. Hutchings, who died at Los Angeles, Cal., Jan. 26, 1920, was born at Peekskill, N.Y., Jun 24, 1839. He came to Waukesha, Wis. with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Purdy G. Hutchings in 1850. His forefathers on both sides were Virginians, and date back to colonial times. He was married in Milwaukee to Miss Margaret McKeand, May 8, 1859, and came to Clark County, Wis. in 1869, settling on their farm at Hutchings Corners in South Pine Valley, where they lived forty-three years. In the development of his town and in affairs of the community, Mr. Hutchings took a prominent part. He was active in town, county and road district matters and in the Lynn Mutual Insurance Co. In 1912 he sold his farm and moved to California, making his home in Los Angeles.

In September 1918 he had a stroke of paralysis and has been an invalid from that time till his death, and had to be cared for at a sanitarium. Death came to him as a release and he died painlessly and with apparent calmness. He was survived by his wife and three children: a son, John Hutchings and two daughters, Mrs. J. W. McAdams and Miss Mamie Hutchings, all living in Los Angeles.

Mrs. McAdams writes that the funeral sermon was preached by Rev. Dr. McNinch of the Bellamy Presbyterian Church. The following former Wisconsin people were present, and sat with the members of the family at the funeral: Mr. and Mrs. A. H. De Dane, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Neff, Mr. and Mrs. Monte Wren, Mr. and Mrs. George McAdams, Mrs. Barbara Paulus Jones, and Miss Angie Neff. Their presence was a touching and befitting expression of their long friendship. Owing to ill health John Hutchings and the son-in-law, J. W. McAdams could not attend the funeral.

The flowers from friends and relatives were a liberal expression of love and sympathy. According to the expressed wishes of the deceased, the remains were cremated.
