Johnson, Oscar E. (20 JUN 1869 - 30 Mar 1921)

The accident which befell Mr. O. E. Johnson on Tuesday evening of last week, mention of which was made in our last week's issue, resulted in his death about three o'clock the following morning. As was stated last week Mr. Johnson attempted to mail a letter on the mail car on train No. 5 after the train has started from the station. In doing so he was struck by the side of the car, which felled him to the ground. When assistance first reached him it was supposed that he had suffered only a severe cut near his right shoulder, nearly severing the arm. He was carried to his home on a stretcher and Dr. Jackey and Riopelle were called when it was found that the skull of the unfortunate man had also been fractured. He was taken to the hospital at Marshfield on train No. 4, where he received immediate attention, but having in the meantime become unconscious, little or no hope was entertained for improvement of his condition. Death followed at three o'clock, about seven hours after the accident. The body was brought here (Thorp, Clark County, Wis.) the same day for burial.

Oscar Emil Johnson was born in Sweden on the 20th day of June 1869, where his boyhood was spent. At the age of 19 years he came to America, locating at various places in Minnesota and North and South Dakota, and was also for a time in Canada. He also attended the Minnesota Business College at Minneapolis. In 1911 he came to Thorp and settled on a farm in the town of Reseberg. He was married to Mrs. Minnie Hansman Aug. 14, 1913, and since that time he has been engaged in the hardware business in this village.

Mr. Johnson was an honest man and a good citizen and generous to a fault. Having lived according to the light he had, and who shall judge that light but the just God, before whom we must all pass, we lower all that remains of our friend and neighbor to his final resting place, to calmly await the reward of a just God.

Deceased was an honored member of Thorp Lodge No. 264, F. & A.M., which organization had charge of the funeral, which took place from their lodge rooms on Saturday afternoon last, R. H. Tolford, master of the lodge concluding the services, burial taking place in the cemetery in the town of Reseberg.

Mr. Johnson leaves to mourn, his wife, Mrs. Minnie Johnson, and stepsons, Harry Fr. Hansman of Knapp and Arthur Hansman of Thorp, on stepdaughter, Miss Meta Hansman, with whom the community sincerely sympathizes in their great bereavement.
