Behringer, Leona (6 Apr 1912 - 18 Apr 2003)

Leona Behringer, 91, Neillsville, formerly of Greenwood, died on Friday, April 18, 2003, at Memorial Medical Center, Neillsville. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., on Tuesday, April 22, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Christie. The Rev. Kevin Hanke officiated. Burial was in the Greenwood City Cemetery. Pallbearers were John Heck, Harold "Vern" Heck, Jack Anfinson, Joshua Anfinson, Ron Nadeau and Joe Wilcott. Honorary pallbearer was Tom Garbisch.

Leona Mary Frieda Schulte was born on April 6, 1912, in the town of Green Grove, to Charles and Alvina (nee Awe) Schulte. She attended the rural Green Grove school and did domestic work in the neighborhood. She married Norman Behringer on Aug. 14, 1929, in the town of Colby. They lived in Loyal for a time while her husband worked for the railroad and in construction. They then purchased a farm north of Greenwood and farmed there until retiring in 1976. Following their retirement, they both worked for the canning factory in Loyal. She lived on the farm until her husband died on May 14, 1992. She then moved to the Black River Apartments, Greenwood, and lived there until moving to the Neillsville nursing home in December 2001. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Christie. Her interests included sewing, quilting and embroidering.

Survivors include three children, Norbert (Dorothy) Behringer, Cameron, Verland (Janet) Behringer, Walsenburg, Colo., and Wilma (Hareld) Heck, Greenwood; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Lorraine Schulte, Abbotsford. Preceding her in death were her husband, Norman; her parents; one sister, Lorinda Fink; and one brother, Rueben Schulte.

Cuddie Funeral Home, Greenwood, assisted the family with arrangements.
