Weaver, Elias (20 JUL 1841 - 16 OCT 1906)

Another Clark County, Wis. pioneer is gone. Elias Weaver died at his home in the village of Loyal, Clark County, Wis. at 9 o'clock Tuesday morning, Oct. 16, 1906 at the age of 65 years 2 months and 27 days. The cause of his death was cancer of the stomach with which he had been afflicted for more than a year past. Every effort was made to relieve his suffering and prolong his life; many physicians and surgeons were consulted but none gave permanent relief while the insidious disease kept steadily undermining the sufferer's constitution. At a last hope he was taken to the hospital at Rochester, Minn., where an operation was performed with the hope at least of affording temporary relief. The rugged constitution of the man had broken and his strength left him rapidly after the operation. He was brought home in a special car Monday evening and the next morning the last vestige of his strength ebbed away and at nine o'clock he died. His mind was active to the end and he was conscious to the very last.

Mr. Weaver was born in Dansville, Livingston Co., N.Y. in 1841. He came west to Dodge Co., Wis., and on Feb. 6, 1964 was united in marriage to Miss Barbara E. Norton at Iron Ridge, Wis.

In 1867 Mr. and Mrs. Weaver came to Clark County and settled in the town of Loyal, one mile north of this village. They immediately set to work to build a home in the forest. Mr. Weaver being a man of enterprise and shrewd business ability soon adapted himself to the times and conditions of this new country and it was in a remarkably short time that he was well known through this section as one of the principal loggers. He lived in the town of Loyal for a number of years and was one of the town's first assessors, which office he held for eighteen years. In 1891 he engaged in the hotel business in this village, building the Weaver House, which became of the most popular hotels in the county. He continued to run this hotel until the time of his late illness.

The news of his death will be regretted by a large circle of friends and acquaintances throughut the county and by the traveling public with whom he had a large acquaintance. By the latter he was known as an accommodating landlord, possessing a droll humor that never failed to put the guest in a happy frame of mind.

Elias Weaver leaves to mourn his death, his wife Barbara E. Weaver, and five grown children, three daughters and two sons. Four of the children, Mrs. Austin Church, Mrs. Eric Amble, Mrs. S. Johnson and son, Morris, live at Loyal and vicinity and son Ellis lives in Woodruf, this state. All the members of the family were present during the last hours of his sickness. Garvin Mace, a nephew of Menomonie Falls is here to attend the funeral, which will be held at the house Thursday afternoon at two o'clock. The funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Harry Philpott. The remains will be interred in the Dodgeville cemetery by the side of a son who died in childhood.

Thus closes the life of a citizen long identified with the business interest of Loyal, who was universally like and respected by his neighbors and a large circle of acquaintances.
