MAPLEWOOD BADGERS 4-H CLUB

The first Maplewood 4-H Club began about 1948 and was led by Roscoe Meacham. In 1960, the group was organized as the Maplewood Badgers 4-H with Duane Meacham as their general leader. He has been succeeded in this respect by Mrs. Merlin Justman Mrs. Bernard Raczkowski, and presently serving as leaders are Mr. and Mrs. Donald Newman. The club has been very active in the entire years of their organization. It was instrumental in promoting the Unity Township Anti-Rabies Ordinance in 1965 and received a Health Achievement Award from the State Medical Society, along with free tickets to the State Historical Medical Museum in Prairie du Chein. This was the beginning of the trips which they now enjoy yearly to various places. Steve Justman, in 1961, won Jr. Showmanship and Jr. Championship with his Ayrshire Heifer at the State Fair. One of the club's activities in 1967 was recognized by the National 4-H Magazine. Barb Messer, in 1968, represented Maplewood Badgers in the Style Review at the State Fair and was a member of the Wisconsin 4-H band. Barb Rogers, in 1973, was an inter-exchange student, and in 1974 was a member of -the Wisconsin 4-H band. Club members have won many county awards including the Key Award, the highest award given to 4-H members. The club's annual activities include Fire Prevention window displays, June Dairy Month, campaign drives for UNICEF, softball, basketball, and the County Fair at Neillsville. The club purchased a U. S. flag through Congressman Obey, which was flown over the White House. The club presented this flag to the town chairman, Wayne Hendrickson, to be used at the Town Hall. The club also assisted in caring for the lawn around the Town Hall.
