Donald Cart Raether 1923-2003

Donald Carl Raether, 79, lifelong resident of the Gilman area, passed away March 16 at the Cornell Area Care Center in Cornell.

Donald was born on May 25, 1923 in the Bellinger Cheese Factory in the town of Taft, the son of Herman and Edith (Brenner) Raether. He grew up in the Boyd-Edson area and attended area schools. He then enlisted in the service and was in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving as a medic.

Donald was united in marriage to Marge Fedors on August 7, 1956, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Gilman. After his marriage he worked at the Gilette Rubber Company and then farmed and logged in the town of Aurora. He was a supervisor and the chairman for the town of Aurora for over 30 years.

Donald enjoyed fishing—especially ice fishing in Canada, hunting, bowling and traveling.

Donald is survived by one son, Wayne (Sheryl) Raether, and one daughter, Diane (Earl) Stanek, all of Gilman; eight grandchildren; one great-grandson; and one sister, Shirley (Vic) Rolland of Stanley.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife, Marge, in 2001.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow at Zion Lutheran Church in Gilman, with Pastor Steven Haag officiating. Burial will follow in Meadowbrook Cemetery.

Friends May call tonight at the Plombon Funeral Home in Gilman from 4-8 p.m.
