Altenberger, Joseph (27 Jan 1856 - 10 Jan 1920)

Joseph Altenberger, one of the oldest and most respected citizens of the town of Colby, Clark County, Wis., died at his home on Saturday, Jan. 10, 1920, at the age of 64 years. Paralysis was the cause of his death.

Joseph Altenberger was born in Sheboygan Co., Wis. on Jan. 27, 1856, and came to the town of Colby in the year 1878, settling on a farm. On Nov. 23, 1883 he was united in marriage to Clara Schulte and to this union eight children were born, seven of who are still living.

In the death of Mr. Altenberger, the town of Colby loses one of it's most progressive and influential citizens. He took great interest in local affairs and represented the town on the county board for several terms. His great influence in securing things for the betterment of the community in which he lived will be sadly missed by his old neighbors and many friends.

He is survived by his wife and one son, Wm. Altenberger of Colby, and six daughters: Mrs. Fred Wiegman Jr., Colby; Mrs. John Taushek of Luxemburg, Wis.; Mrs. Henry Meiers, Appleton; and Lydia, Elenora and Pauline at home. Besides he leaves three brothers: Jacob of Sheboygan Falls; John of Appleton and Fred of Kiel; and three sisters: Mrs. Henry Nettling, Los Angeles, Cal.; Mrs. Anton Lang, Menasha and Mrs. Frank Unholt of Kiel, to all of who the sympathy os this entire community is extended in their hour of bereavement.

The funeral was held yesterday morning from St. Mary's Catholic Church in this city at 10 o'clock a.m., Rev. H. Lachnit officiating, and the burial took place in the Colby St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. The remains were in charge of undertaker, F. W. Lulloff.
