Steinwand, Susana (28 Jan 1843 - April 1926)

Susana Weber was born Jan. 28, 1843, at Bottweil, Wurtenberg, Germany. In 1865 she went to Toledo, Ohio, where she remained a short time, when she moved to Manitowoc Co., Wis., where she was married to Ambrose Steinwand in 1866, and they lived there on a farm until the fall of 1875, when the family moved to Colby, Wis., which was then a little more than a vast wilderness. Eight children were born to them, five sons and three daughters. Mr. Steinwand, her husband, one sons and three daughters preceded her in death. Mr. Steinwand died eighteen years ago. Four sons, Joseph F., Ambrose M., George, Theodore J., twelve grandchildren and three great-grandchildren are left to mourn her death.

For the past six years, Mrs. Steinwand has made her home with her son, Ambrose, and family. She had always enjoyed good health until the last three weeks. The direct cause of death was apoplexy. Funeral services were held Saturday morning at the Catholic Church, rev. Lachnit officiating, and interment made in the Colby Catholic Cemetery. Six grandsons acted as pallbearers and four granddaughters acted as flower girls.

Grandma Steinwand, as she was known to her many friends, had always lived a true Christian life in word and deed and her greatest interest in life was her home and family.

Unable to find any place like Bottweil anywhere in Germany, I tried to think about how writing May have been misinterpreted. I strongly suspect that the location should be ROTTWEIL which is a large town in Wuerttemberg, not too far north of the Swiss border.

It is also only about 21 km (12 mi.) south of where I suspect the Steinwands might have originated - in the region of Sulz am Neckar. While my own Steinwands are from that region, I have not proven if the Colby Steinwands are from there. If anyone has established a town of origin, I would appreciate hearing from them.
