Eugene Walter, Sr.

Eugene Walter, Sr., 82, of Neillsville, died Thurs., Aug. 21, at his home on River Avenue in Neillsville.

Eugene Joseph Walter was born on January 17, 1921 in the Town of York, Clark County, Wisconsin, the son of John and Rose (Schmidt) walter. He attended Marryville school in York Township and also Granton High School. After his schooling, he went to work on the family farm, also in York Township.

On June 2, 1942 he was united in marriage to Mildred Stochek at Christ the King Catholic Church in Spencer. In 1950, they took over ownership of the family farm and farmed there until 1971. Then they moved six tenths of a mile down the road to their second farm and farmed there until 1992. In 1992 they moved off the farm to their home on River Avenue, where fishing and gardening were his passion.

Eugene was a life-long member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Neillsville. He was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Knights of Columbus Council #4963, and a member of the Farm Service Agency.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred; seven children, Barbara (Dennis) Sobczak of West Bend, Wis., Joan (James) Pietrzak of Shakopee, Minn., Eugene (Judith) walter, Jr. of Granton, Francis (Judith) Walter, Stephen Walter, Rebecca (Francis) Trybula, all of Neillsville, Christopher Walter of Greenwood; 18 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one grandson, Daniel Walter.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Eugene was held Monday, Aug. 25, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Neillsville. The Celebrant was Fr. Donald Wilger. Music was provided by Ronald Resong, organist, Rita Kuchenbecker, solist, and St. Mary's Adult Choir. Interment followed in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Neillsville.

casket bearers were James Walter, Mark Walter, Robert Walter, Timothy Walter, Eric Sobczak, and Dr. Douglas Puffer.

The Gesche Funeral Home assisted Eugene's family with arrangements.
