Charles Ratelle (John Uldage Ratelle)

Died, at his home in this village, on Wednesday, February 16th 1910, at the noon hour, Charles Ratelle, at the age of forty years.

The deceased was born on November 22, 1869, in the town of Rudolph in this state. Sixteen years ago he went to March Rapids and opened a barbershop and a year later was married. Eleven years ago he came to this village and opened a barbershop in the present post office and resided here up to the time of his death.

The deceased went to Oshkosh to have an operation performed for a tumor and the doctor informed him that he was too weak. He returned home and has been absent from his place of business for four months and since that time has not been out of his home and for two months has not left his bed, bearing his sufferings as a man should with the greatest patience. His great popularity among his acquaintances was shown by the immense quantity of floral tokens at his funeral presented by his numerous friends, among them being a star by the Modern Woodmen, half moon by the Beavers, anchor by the Maccabees, carnations by Royal Neighbors, carnations by of the Catholic school and many others. These flowers mutely speak the pathos of a parting word, and were placed upon his casket by his friends. None but those who have sat in the shadow of a great bereavement can justly weigh such sorrow as this. Those who have gone down into the valley of suffering and stood for months by the side of a loved one as hope after hope dropped away as the petals fall from the fading flower, know that such anguish cannot find solace in the tenderest words. He leaves to mourn his loss a wife, two daughters, Pearl and Loretta, and other relatives. Those from abroad who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. O. Dudley, Clarence Christenson of Grand Rapids, Nick Ratelle of Rudolph and Mrs. R. D. Miles of Rhinelander.

The funeral services were held at the Catholic Church at nine o’clock on Saturday morning and the remains buried in Catholic cemetery.
