Mary M. Davis, who was born October 23, 1858, at Oshkosh, Wis., passed away at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Jesse Mortimer, Saturday, November 12, at the age of 80 years, one month and 19 days. When a girl, her parents moved to Lynn Grove, Iowa where she grew to womanhood. She was married to Jeremiah Davis, August 29, 1876, at Lynn Grove and moved to Fond du Lac county where they established their home. To this union were born eight children: Belle, Dave, Susie, Jay, Ed, Jesse, Pearl and Merton. In 1900 the family moved to Clark county settling on a farm in the town of York, where they lived for 11 years, until they moved to Neillsville that the younger children might attend high school. Six years later they moved to Marshfield where they lived until the death of Mr. Davis in December, 1919. In April 1920, she was married to Ben Davis of Spencer, Iowa where she lived until her health began to fail in 1930. Being unable any longer to take care of Mr. Davis, who had then become an invalid, passing away in July 1931, she came back to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. Jesse Mortimer, latter living three years with another daughter, Susie, Mrs. Will Benedict, and visited other children while she was able. Mrs. Davis had been under a doctor's care since August 1937 and been confined to her bed since August, 1938. Throughout her illness she remained cheerful. She frequently spoke of church and of visiting her children. She was a devout christian and a great lover of music, and always eager to do anything to promote the interest of the church. She was a loving, kind and generous mother, always willing to help any of her children. She is survived by her children, Belle, Mrs. Jesse Mortimer; Susie, Mrs. Will Benedict, Jay of York, Dave of Lake Mills, Ed of Eau Claire, Jesse of Minneapolis and Merton of Medford. She preceded in death by a daughter, Pearl, July 15, 1917. In addition to the above she leaves to mourn here death 18 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren and host of relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at the York Center church Tuesday and she was laid to rest beside her loved ones. Rev. Fleming of Loyal delivered the funeral sermon, and six grandsons were the pall bearers: Nyle and Marvin Benedict, Marvin and Lowell Davis, Joe Davis, and Ellis Mortimer. The singers were Geo. Wilson, Mrs. Wm. Schmidtke of Granton, Mrs. Bert Walker and Jim Young. Mrs. Gilbertson of Granton had charge of the funeral. Those who attended from a distance were Mr. & Mrs. Ed Davis of Eau Claire, Mr. & Mrs. Jesse Davis of Minneapolis, Mr. & Mrs. Merton Davis and sons, Bernard and Halan, and Mr. & Mrs. Joe Davis of Medford, Mr. & Mrs. Byron Jones, Mr. & Mrs. Hugh Jones and Mrs. Whade of Spencer, Iowa.
