John Vandeberg, one of Clark County's most prominent citizens, died on Saturday afternoon, April 20 at his Neillsville home at the age of 71 years, 2 months and 16 days. Mr. Vandeberg fell and severely bruised his hip at his home on March 6 and since that time had been confined to his bed during which time he suffered considerably. Mr. Vandeberg was born at Milwaukee, February 4, 1858, to Mr. & Mrs. Chris Vandeberg. When but a small boy, he moved with his parents to Fond du Lac County and settled on a farm. Soon after, they purchased a tract of land west of Waupun where John attended district school and grew to manhood. He obtained a thorough knowledge of agriculture while working on his father's farm and in 1882 the Vandeberg family moved to Clark County and purchased a farm in Section 1, York Township. In July of the same year John was married to Lillie I. Lawrence and the newlyweds took up housekeeping on the Vandeberg farm. Mr. Vandeberg cleared the land and made many improvements. In those days, farmers cradled their grain by hand and Mr. Vandeberg was an expert at this art. Not possessing a team at the start of his agricultural career, Mr. Vandeberg exchanged his labor for the use of a team. He held the office of treasurer and supervisor of York Township for a number of years and for 24 years served on the school board in the district in which he lived. For 21 years, he served as treasurer of the school board and three years he served as clerk. Being well qualified to serve his community, he conscientiously served his town and community for many years. Five children were born to bless this union, one son, Manley, dying on December 31, 1904. Two sons and two daughters survive. Alvin, on the home farm in York Township; Horace, of York Township; Ida, Mrs. Edward Voight, of York Township; and Ruth, Mrs. Elmer Keller, of Pine Valley Township. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 2 brothers, 2 sisters, 4 half-sisters and 3 half-brothers. Deceased two brothers are Garret, of Baldwin; and Abram of York Township. Two sisters are Johanna, Mrs. Z. B. Means of Lake Wales, Florida; and Dina, Mrs. John Glewen of Waupun. The funeral services were held at 2 o'clock on Wednesday afternoon at the York Center Methodist Church, with the Rev. S. J. Lambright, pastor of the Neillsville Methodist Church, officiating. Interment took place in the family lot at the York Cemetery.
