Hein, Valentine (23 Feb 1833)

Valentine Hein was born in Germany, Feb. 23, 1833. In 1857 he came to America and landed in New York. Coming direct to Wisconsin, he stopped first at Watertown, but was compelled to seek other fields because of the scarcity of work. After trying Lake Mills and Tomah he came to Angelo, where he remained five years. He later removed to Waterloo, where he remained seven years, coming to Humbird, Clark County, Wis. in 1872. He has for years been identified with the Humbird Roller Mills, being the first owner, and although the business has since passed under the control of his son, O. M. Hein, he still takes an active interest in the work. Mr. Hein was married in 1865 to Miss Theresa Schmidt and has had four children, all of whom are living. He believes our reawakening was due to the cheese factory, creamery and new merchants. As to the future Mr. Hein takes a very roseate view, believing that times will never be worse than they have been and are bound to improve instead of retrograde. Perhaps we will never attain the prosperity that was ours thirty years past, when the stage line ran from here to Neillsville, but our present prosperity is a more permanent and valuable type than was that of former days; he would number among the industries that have contributed in no small degree to our prosperity, the creamery, cheese factory and mill, and believes that if we could interest enough capital here to start some manufacturing business we would need have no fear for the future of our town.
