Miller, Benjamin (5 Mar 1831 - 11 Sep 1914)

Benjamin Miller, an old resident of this vicinity (Humbird, Clark County, Wis.), died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. T. A. McMullen, 1408 Mississippi St., La Crosse, at 9:20 o'clock on Friday morning, Sept. 11, 1914.

Mr. Miller was born in Madison Co., N.Y., March 5, 1831, and came west with his parents, settling on a farm in Sauk Co., moving to Tomah in 1854, where he married Miss Catherine Weaver. They settled on a farm there, which they afterwards sold and located on a farm in Houghtonburg. They continued farming until twelve years ago, when he disposed of his place and moved into this village (Humbird, Clark County, Wis.), living a retired life until the death of his wife four years ago. Since that time he made his home with his daughter in La Crosse.

Mr. Miller is survived by seven children: Mrs. T. A. McMullen, La Crosse; Mrs. Anna Shatswell, Buford, N.D.; Mrs. Charlotte Frink, Warrens; George, Pullman, Wash.; John, Webb Lake; Jay, Fall Creek; William, Stanley.

Mr. Miller served in the Civil War, enlisting in Co. I, 49th Regt., Wis. Vol Inf. He was a member of Wilson Colwell Post, G. A. R. of La Crosse, and of Humbird Lodge No. 191, F. & A.M. Funeral services were held at the home of his daughter in La Crosse on Sunday afternoon, the Rev. D. C. Jones and the Grand Army Post officiating. The remains were brought to this village Monday afternoon and services held at the M. E. Church, Rev. A. B. Scoville of Fairchild, preaching the sermon, the funeral being held in accordance with the Masonic Rites. W. H. Clark conducted the burial ceremony of the lodge. Interment was made in the family lot in Houghtonburg Cemetery.

Of the family who were in attendance at the burial were Mr. and Mrs. T. A. McMullen of La Crosse and Mr. and Mrs. Jay Miller of Fall Creek.
