Mazza, Dorothy (Hessel) (25 APR 1921 - 5 MAY 2014)

Dorothy Mazza, age 93, of Abbotsford, passed away Monday, May 5, 2014, at Golden LivingCenter-Continental Manor in Abbotsford under the tender care of hospice.

Dorothy was born April 25, 1921, in Greenwood, the daughter of Paul and Bertha (Worchel) Hessel. Her family moved to Abbotsford shortly after she graduated from high school in 1938.

After a couple adventurous decades spent mostly in Chicago and the East Coast, Dorothy returned to the Abbotsford area in 1958 with her husband, Sal. When Sal died unexpectedly in 1963, Dorothy, who had recently taken an interest in antiques, decided to go into the antiques business. It was to be one of the great loves of her life, one that she pursued for the next 45 years.

Dorothy was a caring member of her family and was a woman of influence and conviction. She will be missed by her family, friends and many others who knew her.

“Aunt Dorothy” is survived by her nieces, LuAnn Huston, Debby Kuczynski, Joanne Babl and Leathia McDonald; and her nephews, Gary Hessel, Bill Trump and Larry Hessel.


Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Bertha Hessel; her sister, Evelyn; her brothers, Lawrence and Howard; her niece, Linda; her first husband, Benny Decker; her second husband, Sal Mazza; and her special friend, Harold Ruesch.

A memorial service will be held at Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home in Abbotsford later this summer. Burial will be held in Abbotsford Public Cemetery.
