Stan, thanks for confirming the location of the West Eaton School. This is the same school I attended from first grade in 1948-49 through part of third grade in 1950-51 when my family moved to Chicago. My younger brother Ray also attended the school for all of 1949-50 through the time we left for the big city.

During one Christmas program I was "Mr. Big Ears". I also remember bad weather days in the basement. On one such stormy day lightening hit the roof and started a small fire which was quickly put out. I seem to remember one of the older boys (Clarence?) putting his head out the roof through the smokey hole before the teacher ordered him out of the building. My favorite time at school was when I'd get my seat work done and was allowed to go to the small library room (closet?) to choose a book to read.

I also remember being called to the teacher's desk area for a reading or math lesson with other children of various ages. There were never more than 18 children in the whole school.

My experiences at this school formed my values toward education. In 2001 I retired after serving 37 years in public education in various Chicago suburban school districts first as a junior high and high school teacher, then as an elementary principal, a junior high principal, and finally as a superintendent.

Is there anyone else who went to school at West Eaton in the late 1940's? I'd be thrilled to hear from you.
