Steitz, George (11 MAY 1828 - 30 APR 1903)

Died, at his home in this city (Colby, Clark Co., Wis.) on Thursday, April 30th, 1903, George Steitz, aged 74 years, 11 months and 19 days.

George Steitz was born at Frankfort, Germany, May 11th, 1828. He came to this county in 1851, settling in New York, where he was united in marriage with Margaret Day one year later. For several years they lived at Fond du Lac, from which place they came here about thirty-two years ago and took up a homestead about eight miles southeast of here.

Mr. Steitz was a barber by trade and for a long time his shop on Division St. was the only brick building of which Colby could boast. He ahs been in feeble health for the past two or three years, but recently contracted a cold from the effects of which his death was due.

He was a cheerful sort of a man always having an interesting story to tell and his kindly greeting will be missed greatly by his scores of friends. Besides his wife he leaves two sons, Albert, whose present whereabouts are not known, he having been in the Klondike when last heard from, and George, and one daughter, Mrs. Henry Rollman of Chilton, Wis.

The funeral was held Saturday afternoon from the M.E. Church and the services conducted by Rev. W.M. Philpott. The body was interred in Colby Cemetery. The pallbearers were Geo. Eder, Henry Welsch, John Lavigne, M. Young, N.J. White and A.W. Prentice.
