Pickett, Eli (? - 29 MAR 1904)

Eli Pickett was caught by a shaft in Parrett’s sawmill at Romeo, Wednesday morning and instantly killed. The mill had just started up that morning and hardly got started when the accident happened. We are unable to give full particulars. Eli was an old settler in the town of Unity, Clark Co., Wis., and was well and favorably known to nearly all in this section. He leaves a wife and five children.

Picket, Eli (29 FEB 1860 – 29 MAR 1904)

Our village (Spencer, Wis.) was shocked Wednesday morning to hear that Eli Pickett had been killed in Parrett's Mill at Romeo. The mill was just starting up for this season's run and he was down below fixing some of the machinery. When the mill had been running about ten minutes he was missed and the mill was immediately stopped. He was found where his clothing had been caught by a shaft and his coat and vest were drawn up about his head and neck in such a manner as to dislocate his neck and cause almost instant death. Just how the accident happened will never be known. The funeral occurred Friday afternoon at the M.E. Church, with Revs. Stewart and Johnson officiating. The church was crowded to its utmost capacity and many were unable to get in at all. Deceased was born at Hartford, Wis., Feb. 29l 1860, and came to Clark County with his parents when he was twelve years old. In 1892 he married Agnes Parrett, who, with five children, survives him. He was a carpenter and millwright by trade and having lived here and worked in this neighborhood for so many years he was widely known, and by his genial ways made friends of all who knew him. His sudden death cast a gloom over the whole village and words cannot express the sympathy felt for his bereaved family, his father and mother, and other relatives. Dr. Sam Pickett and wife Wilton, Leo Shussman and wife, and Jennie of Sheboygan, John Kaudy and wife of Colby and Mr. Fuller and wife, are among the relatives who came to be present at the funeral.
