Spangler, Joseph (17 March 1861 - 7 Oct. 1935)

Joseph Spangler one of the odler residents of Clark County, passed away suddenly, Oct. 7. Mr. Spangler who lived on the north side, had come down town on business, and was suddenly taken with an attak of apoplexy, and was removed to the Neillsville Hospital where he died that evening.

Joseph Spangler, son of George and Mary Spangler was born in Jefferson County, Wis., March 17, 1861. His parents lived for a time in Milwaukee, where the father followed the mason trade, later moving to Jefferson County. Here Joseph grew up on a farm, but started out for himself at the age of 17. He went first to Waukesha and later to Monroe County.

Soon after he came to Clark County and worked in lumber c amps and on farms. He bought 80 acres of wild land in Section 5, town of York and at the age of 22 located on the tract and when not working out, he cleared land. For several years he worked alone without a team.

In 1892 Mr. Spangler was married to Rose Pompo, who was born in Russville, Trempealean County, and they settled on their land, continued to improve it and erect fine farm buildings. They bought additional lands until they had a farm of 200 acres, well equipped with machinery and well stocked with cattle and horses.

About 9 years ago he moved to Neillsville and bought a home, where he resided till his death.

He is survived by his wife and their seven children: Anton, Joseph, Philip, and Frank Spangerl, and Mrs. H. G. Magadanz all of the town of York; Mrs. Victor Garbisch of Marshfield, and Mrs. Max Zink, Fairchildn; 12 grandchildren and one greatgrandchild, one sister and two brothers.

Funeral services were held Thursday morning at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Rev. Peter Weber officiating.

The pallbearers were Bernard Portz, John Goetz, Geo. Haeuser, James Donahue, Frank Hemp and Geo. Scheckelman.

Those from away who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs.Geo. Spangler; Mr. and Mrs. Minnie Wilson of Sun Prairie, Wis.; Mr and Mrs. Albert Spangler, Jefferson.
