School: Greenwood HS Play (7 May 1943)

Contact: Duane Horn

Found! A perfect mystery thriller called "Who Killed Aunt Caroline"? This play was written by that well known writer of detective tales Grant Richards. It has just been released for amateur production by Samuel French. The Senior class has been given permission to be the first to give this play in this community. Plans now are to present it to the public at the Greenwood High School Auditorium on Friday, May 7, 1943.

"The Endicott Family are the kind of folks who live next door; but soon you realize one of these genial people has committed calculating murder! Aunt Caroline deserved to die. But who could have killed her? None of the family seems like a murderer, but there's nobody else, nobody with the slightest motive for poisoning Aunt Caroline, nobody who---but wait, maybe there was! You're kept guessing to the very end."

Characters of Who Killed Aunt Caroline

(*lead roles; characters listed in order of number of lines)

Lieutenant Clayton* (Act II & III only) – Not a hard-boiled detective. Likable, yet conducts his
investigations in a businesslike fashion. Wears suit, not uniform; carries no weapon.

father. Clean-cut and fun-loving. Devoted to his family.
Dave Thompson* – Young reporter for the local paper. Desires to marry Agnes.
Dan – Ricky's friend who is one year younger. Popular football player. Very loyal; timid around girls.

Eleanor Endicott* - Pleasant, loving mother who thinks only of the welfare of her children. Piano
teacher, good sense of humor, protective. Widow.
Beryl Endicott* – Boy-crazed, out-going middle daughter. Plots to get Dan to take her to the junior
dance. Says what's on her mind.

Agnes* – Eldest daughter who works as librarian to support family. Quiet, and intelligent with a deep sense of responsibility. In love with Dave, but willing to put this aside for the sake of her family.
Miss Louise MacLain* – High school chemistry teacher. Sophisticated and modern.
Cicely* – Youngest daughter. Very precocious. Actress must be able to skate on stage.
Miss Mabbitt – Aunt Caroline's companion. Frail, timid woman. Cowers to Aunt Caroline's orders.

Aunt Caroline (end of Act I only) – Complete contrast to Miss Mabbitt. Mean, domineering and
miserly. Bitter, sarcastic manner of speech. Must die on stage.
Una (Very beginning & end of show) – Young, brattish piano student. Slight knowledge of piano
helpful to play very badly.
