Walbridge, George (1844 - 23 OCT 1908)

Henry Meritt received a telegram last Saturday from Spokane, Wash., stating that George Walbridge died the evening before. Up to time of going to press no further word has been received. It was not known to his relatives or intimate friends here (Colby, Clark Co., Wis.) that he was sick, and the news of his death comes to us like a shock from a clear sky.

Mr. Walbridge was born in Orange Co, Vermont, in 1844, where he lived until 1857, when he came to Wisconsin, settling on a farm near Menasha. He was married Oct. 2nd, 1871, to Ella Meritt, who with her daughter Winnie, Mrs. Thos. Brewer, survive him. In 1874 he came to Colby, and was our leading hardware merchant until 1892, when he sold his business to Krepsky & Meineke, and moved to Spokane, Wash., where he engaged in business, and at the time of his death was cashier of the Spokane State Bank. During his 18 years residence in Colby he filled the office of postmaster for ten years, and represent the town on the county board four years, serving one years as chairman of that honorable body.

While the silence of death wraps and chills us at this moment, memories, sweet and precious, of the time when George and family were our nearest neighbors, come crowding in. We extend to the bereaved wife, daughter and other relatives our deepest sympathy.
