The G.W. Chamberlain Family

This was a difficult biography to write because there is little information about G. W. Chamberlain himself.

From the Military Record of Clark Co., WI compiled by Franklyn Curtiss-Wedge And published in 1918 we know that he is listed as a member Co I of the 14th WI.Infantry during the Civil War and lived in Clark Co, WI even before the War.

On most records (scarce as they are) you are known as H. G. Chamberlain. An H. G. Chamberlain married Mary Conlan in 1864. She was the widow of James Conlan and had eleven children with him. At the time of her death Only four were living and they were listed as follows:

Thomas J Conlan, Michael Conlan, Margaret Softus and James Conlan.

Mary was born in Danville, KY. 1 May 1822. She was Catholic having been converted to that faith when she was twenty and Rev. Father Voltz of Fairchild officiated at her funeral. She died 4 Dec 1882 at her home in Grant, Clark Co, WI. She was 60 yrs 7 mo and 4 days old. She had suffered with cancer for eighteen months. She had been a resident of Clark County, WI since 1848. I could not find a burial site for her in Clark Co, WI.

Lani note/March 2006

I have searched through a number of Internet sites looking for James Conlan in any early history in Clark Co, WI, and have found nothing. If James and Mary Conlan were in Clark Co, WI, as early as 1848 they may have come with James O’Neill’s party or shortly after that. There is a James and a James H Conlan who served in Co. G of the 5th WI. Regiment during the Civil War and a James A Conlan who served in Co. K of the 1st WI. Regiment Heavy Artillery.

I later find another Chamberlain obituary for a Florence (Marsh) Chamberlain.

She was b 31 Aug 1861 in N.Y. and married George Chamberlain 24 Sept. 1883 at Spencer, WI. She died 28 Feb 1920 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Chester Hazen of Owen, WI. George & Florence Chamberlain had five children and three daughters were still living at the time of her death. They are listed as follows on her obituary:

Mrs. Wm. Killary, Donald, WI; Mrs. Goodwin Gunderson, Couderay, WI., and Mrs. Chester Hazen, of Owen, WI. Also left to mourn her were her husband, and three sisters and two brothers listed as follows: Mrs. Carrie Bennett, Portland, OR.; Mrs. Jennie Sanke, Besida, MN.; Mrs. Nettie Truax, Spencer, WI.; Nelson Marsh, Salt, CA. and Herbert Marsh, Portland, OR.

Her husband George Chamberlain is only mentioned by name at the beginning of the obituary listing their marriage. I am assuming he too was living with his daughter, Mrs. Chester Hazen, of Owen, Clark Co., WI. She is buried at the West Spencer Cemetery Sherman Twp, Clark Co., WI.
