Thurber, Irl W. (13 JAN 1908 - 10 SEP 1933)

Irl Wesley Thurber, aged 25, a graduate of Central State Teachers college in Stevens Point in June and since that time the owner of the Ellis street grocery ay 404 Ellis street, Stevens Point, died at St. Michael’s hospital in that city at 3:15 o’clock Sunday afternoon. He underwent an operation for appendicitis on Saturday, September 2. His condition appeared to be favorable for several days but complications developed which caused his death. His condition was grave since last Friday.

The remains were brought to Loyal, his former home on Sunday night, accompanied by relatives, and funeral services were held at the Methodist church here Wednesday morning at 10 0’clock, Rev. Jordon of the Baptist Church, Stevens Point officiating.

The pall bearers were Emil Hjdrsthdt, Wm. Reinke, Alex Peterson, Noel Van Hecke, all of Stevens Point and Claude Castner and Wm. Rottjer of this village.

Irl was born at New Rome, Wis., on January 13, 1908, a son of Dr. and Mrs. G. W. Thurber. His early childhood was spent there, in Chicago and Monroe Center, Wis., after which the family located at Loyal, where he attended the grade school and high school, in 1925, Irl enrolled at Central State Teachers’ college in Stevens Point, taking a one year course and subsequently teaching for two years in a rural school near Phelps. He returned to Stevens Point in the fall of 1928 to continue his education and two years later completed the three-year state graded course. Then he taught mathematics and science for two years in the junior high school at Park Falls.

Mr. Thurber again returned to Stevens Point, in the fall of 1932, to take advanced college work, and was graduated last June, receiving the bachelor of education degree. A week later he opened the grocery store on Ellis street in that city and had conducted the business since that time. While attending college he was employed as a part time linotype operator by the Stevens Point Daily Journal.

Irl was president of the Rural Life club at college during the past year and was a member of the Margaret Ashmun club, a distinction awarded honor students in college. He was a member of the college mixed chorus. He was also active in the Baptist church in Stevens Point, where he was a member of the choir.

Surviving relatives are his parents, one brother, Herbert Thurber, 1209 Clark street, Stevens Point, and two sisters, Genevieve Thurber and Nancy Mary Thurber of this village. Members of his family from Loyal had been called to Stevens Point when his condition became serious and were there when he passed away.
