Gates, Louisa A. (7 July 1856 - 19 Feb. 1937)

Mrs. Charles Gates passed away Friday, Feb. 19, 1937, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Marion Tardiff, in Stevens Point, where she had been cared for in her final illness.

Louisa A. Wheaton, daughter of the late William and Lucy Wheaton, was born at Merrittsville, Canada, July 7, 1856. When she was a small child the family came to Wisconsin and settled on a farm in Jackson County. Here she grew to womanhood, and on Nov. 26, 1874, she was married to Charles Gates of Neillsville, at Black River Falls. They made their home at Neillsville for many years. For some time pass she lived at the home of her brother, William, at Alma Center, until last July, when on account of failing health she was taken to the home of her daughter.

Four children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Gates: Daniel, who died at Chickamauga, Tenn., in July, 1898, while a soldier in the Spanish-American War; Thornton, who died in April, 1929; Elva, Mrs. J. N. Verberkmoes, of Kooska, Idaho, and Vivian, Mrs. Marion Tardiff, of Stevens Point, Wis. She leaves also five grandchildren and one great-grandchild; four brothers, E. M. Wheaton, of Duluth, Minn.; William, C. F., and Frank of Alma Center. Her husband died Feb. 13, 1933.

Her old friends here will remember the charm and beauty of her youth and young womanhood, and the fine qualities of her mature years. All who knew her loved and respected her.

To some who were associated with her in early life, she seemed more than a friend—almost one of the family. At the time of her marriage she was making her home with the R. B. French family at Hatfield and to them especially she was like a daughter.

Those from away who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Marion Tardiff and daughter, Marjorie, Stevens Point; Mr. and Mrs. T. F. Wheaton; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wheaton and son Ralph, and Wm. Wheaton, Alma Center; Albert Wheaton, Detroit, Mich.; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Duxbury and daughter, Blanche, Mrs. Emma Royce, Mrs. Effie Dunn and Harve Sessmon, Alma Center.
