Raine, Alfred Augustus (5 Dec. 1883 - 28 April 1937)

Alfred Augustus Raine was born December 5, 1883 at Leadmine, Wisconsin to John and Hannah Raine. There he spent the first twenty-one years of his life. In 1904, he came with his parents to Clark County to live on the Austin farmsite on Pleasant Ridge. On April 14, 1909, he was united in marriage to Elsie Jahr. To this union two daughters were born: Lela, who is principal of the Romadka School, north of Granton, and Zona, who is a freshman in the Neillsville High School.

After three years of farming Mr. and Mrs. Raine moved to Neillsville where they have resided since.

For the past fifteen years he was employed at the Kleckner Elevator, and will be greatly missed by the many customers for whom he always had a smile and a pleasant word.

Mr. Raine, who was better known as Fred, was taken ill on February 21. Within a week he was taken to the Marshfield hospital and later to the Wisconsin General hospital at Madison where the best of care and all efforts were made to save his life, but he steadily grew weaker until his death early Wednesday morning, April 28. The cause of his death was brain tumor and bronchial pneumonia. In all his suffering he was patient and cheerful.

Fred was a great lover of his home, a faithful and industrious worker, a true husband and kind father, and his many friends will remember him with much kindness.

Besides his wife and two daughters, he is survived by his mother, Mrs. Hannah Raine; two brothers, Everette and Clyde; and two sisters, Maude (Mrs. Ernest Browne) and Rudy, (Mrs. Harold Shedden), all of Neillsville, Wis.

His father, Mr. John Raine and one sister, Ella (Mrs. Harold Huckstead) preceded him in death. He also leaves several nieces and nephews, and many other relatives from the southern part of the state.

Memorial services were held at two o’clock Sunday May 2nd at the M. E. Church. Rev. E. P. Stone officiating. Interment was made in the Neillsville Cemetery.

Those from away who attended the funeral were: Mrs. Andrew Lindsay; and Geo. Raine of Cuba City, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Raine, Dubuque, Iowa; Orville Webster, Platteville, Wis.; Lester Booth, Elk Grove, Wis.; and Geo. McNett, Elmo, Wis.
