Aged Resident Of Levis Found Dead In Barn Saturday

Charles Ehrlich, 79, Dies of Suffocation in Pile of Straw after a Fall

Charles Ehrlich, 79, was found dead in a pile of straw in his barn in the town of Levis about 1:30 Saturday afternoon after searching parties had been looking for him for two days. The elderly man had evidently slid or fallen from the top of the straw pile in the barn in such a manner that one foot got caught and he could not extricate himself. Coroner P. C. Ludovic had an autopsy performed by Dr. Horace Frank, which showed death due to asphyxiation and occlusion.

Mr. Ehrlich had been living alone at the farm since his wife was taken to the asylum at Owen about a month ago, although his children at the time asked him to sell his stock and go to Chicago. Mr. Ehrlich was last seen alive about 4 o’clock Thursday, and as the cows were not milked that night, he must have had the fatal mishap around supper time.

Friday about 75 boys from the CCC camp at City Point joined in the search through marshes, woods and farm buildings. Finally the body was discovered, and it was necessary to loosen some boards to remove it.

Mr. Ehrlich came to Clark County about 25 years ago. He was born in Germany Sept. 26, 1858, and lately had been drawing an old age pension. The body was removed to the Schiller undertaking parlors and on Sunday was taken to Merrillan and shipped to Chicago for interment. The two children, Mrs. Wagner and George Ehrlich, live there.
