Schmocker, John (27 JUN 1844 - 19 JUL 1931)

John Schmocker, for many years a resident of Owen (Clark Co., Wis.), passed away last Sunday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Henry Scheppke at Melrose. He had been suffering from bronchial trouble since last March and more recently was forced to his bed with pneumonia, which caused his death.

Deceased was born in Overid, Switzerland, June 27, 1844. He came to America in 1866, first settling at Batesville, Ind., where he lived for several years. Here he was married to Louise Huber Nov. 26, 1867. They moved to Wisconsin in 1885 and settled on a farm near Stetsonville, wher they lived until 1894. He then moved to Melrose where he conducted a meat market until 1906. Mr. Schmocker then moved to Owen and built what is now the City Meat Market building. He conducted a meat market here for about six months when he sold out and erected the Fremont Hotel, which he conducted for about eight years. Upon selling the Fremont Hotel property he retired from active business life and made his home in this city most of the time.

His wife preceded him in death September 7, 1921. Nine children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Schmocker, seven of whom are living. One son died in infancy and one daughter, Mrs. Wm. Gunther of Minneapolis died six years ago. Surviving children are John Schmocker of Batesville, Ind.; Mrs. Louise McCarron of Little Black, Wis.; Adam Schmocker of Garibaldi, Ore; Mrs. Henry Scheppke, Mrs. Tom Bruley and Mrs. Ed Westfall of Melrose, Wis.; and Chas. Schmocker of Owen, Wis. Twenty-one grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild survive.

Funeral services were held here Tuesday at the Finnish Church, Rev. Anderson of Curtiss officiating. The body was interred at Riverside Cemetery, members of the Withee Odd Fellows Lodge conducting the service at the grave.

Mr. Schmocker was an upright and industrious citizen of the community and leaves a large circle of friends and relatives who mourn his death. Mr. Schmocker was one of the men of whom all had only good things to say.
