Johnson, Joseph L. (19 OCT 1893 - 18 DEC 1932)

Joseph Lavine Johnson was born in Badger Mills, Chippewa Co., Wis., Oct. 19, 1893. When a very young child, his parents moved to Owen (Clark Co., Wis.), in which place he spent his boyhood days.

His academic training began in the public schools of this village where he completed the elementary school and where he also entered the high school. After finishing the regular two year high school course in Owen he transferred to Northland Academy of Ashland, from which institution he completed his secondary schooling. He continued his education in higher institutions, spending two years in Yankton College, Yankton, S.D., later entering the state teachers college of River Falls, where he graduated in the class of 1918.

The vocation of teaching became his life work. In this career he followed his work at Portage, Stanley, Thorp, Ingram, Prentice and Cameron of this state. The greater part of his time in the teaching profession has consisted in the position of principalship of high schools. At the time of his death he was holding this position at Cameron.

By nature Mr. Johnson was readily accepted into the hearts of all who met him. His friendly disposition drew to him a host of friends in each community her served.

Mr. Johnson’s ideals of the simplicity of life often led him into the haunts of nature. His greatest joys found expression in wandering through the forests and along the streams. He had a sense of appreciation for all the loveliness found in the outdoor life. He best gave expression to the profoundness of life, and the existence of a Great Being, when communing with the marvels of Creation.

His death on Dec. 18, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Eau Claire, came after a short illness. All who were with him in his closing earthly existence, marveled at the self possession, the will power, courage and fortitude which he manifested.

He leaves to mourn his parting a wife and three children, Joe Junior, June and Miriam, his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Johnson, one sister, Clara, of Reno, Neb., four brothers, Otto of Aberdeen, Wash., Harold of Owen, Carl of Clear Lake, Edwin of Delta, and hosts of friends.
