The remains of Albert Poppe were brought here (Owen, Clark Co., Wis.) Wednesday from Interwald, and funeral services will be conducted from the Congregational Church this afternoon, Rev. W.P. Powell officiating, and burial will take place in Riverside Cemetery.

Mr. Poppe accidentally shot himself Monday afternoon, while he was crawling through a fence on the farm of his son, near Interwald. He was carrying his gun and was about to do some hunting a short distance from the house.

Mr. Poppe was, a number of years ago, a resident of Owen, and for many years was a logging jobber, having contracts with the John S. Owen Lumber Co. for several years. He was an employer of many men, and will be remembered by those who were in his employ. He is survived by his wife and nine children. He…..(the rest of my copy was cut off)

Information below was provided by Darlene Poppe:

Albert Poppe and my grandfather, Henry Poppe were brothers. This is what I have on Albert Poppe;

Albert was the last child to be born in Canada to Ernst Rudolph and Barbara Elizabeth (Hassenpflug) Poppe.

He was born 14 December 1872 in Poole, Mornington Township, Perth County, Ontario.

Albert, like the rest of the family, worked in the woods during the winters and helped his father farm in the summer. He eventually ran his own lumber camps and continued this kind of work most of his life.

The camps were located in the Clark County area of Wisconsin and around the town of Donald in Taylor County, which is located along the Yellow River. Edna, his wife was the camp's cook and their children helped her out with the camp chores.

There were two bunk houses that held about 100 men, sleeping two to a bed.

The mail went out once a week, by horse and sleigh, to the town of Hanabal, Taylor County, Wisconsin.

Albert had a reputation for being a good camp boss and that his camps were clean, had good food and good pay. He had no trouble getting the area men to work for him. Albert was also know for being a good farmer and for his love of horses.

In 1921 or 1922, he has his finger cut off accidentally while in Owen, Clark County, Wisconsin and since there was no hospital in the town he traveled to the hospital in Wausau, Marathon County, Wisconsin.

Albert was about 6' tall and fair complexion.

The area men considered him to be an excellent hunter with a gun or bow and arrow as he could shot and hit most game at any distance.

When the country was at war he was considered to old so he had no military service. He was affiliated with the Democratic Party and the Lutheran Church. His children were educated in the "Poppe" School which he helped build.

Albert died on Monday 29 August 1932 in Greenwood Township, Taylor County, Wisconsin, at the age of 59 years, 8 months and 16 days old.

Roy, his son, became worried when his father hadn't returned from hunting and it was getting late in the day, It is believed that Albert, while hunting in the woods, tripped over a wire fence and his gun went off killing him. He was buried 1 September 1932 in Riverside Cemetery, Withee, Wisconsin.

Albert married Edna Belle Timblin, 26 December 1902 in Butler Township, Clark County, Wisconsin. Edna was the daughter of William and Mary Jane (Smith) Timblin from Thorp, Wisconsin. She was born in Daquscahonda, Elk County, Pennsylvania 20 March 1880.

Edna re-married after the death of Albert to Albert Henry Barlow. He lived in Jim Falls, Chippewa County, Wisconsin. Edna died in Cadott 8 July 1960 at the age of 79 years, 3 months and 18 days. she is buried next to Albert Henry Barlow in Brooklawn Cemetery, Cadott.

Children of Albert and Edna Belle (Timblin) Poppe were; 1. Clara Mae b 14 August 1897 2. Etta Belle b 20 December 1899 d 19 November 1949 3. LeRoy Everett b 3 November 1901 4. This is all I have.

Take care,

Darlene Poppe
