CHARLES BAKER STRUCK DOWN ON CHICAGO STREET

Going to Whiting, Indiana, a suburb of Chicago, to visit his children with a view to possibly moving there, Charles W. Baker of Aitkin, met a tragic death last Saturday in Chicago when struck down by a bus, expiring an hour later in a Catholic hospital. He had been in the city almost three weeks and was about to return home.

The body was brought here and a requiem high mass was held in St. James church Wednesday morning with the Rev. Father Wohlrab officiating.

Mr. Baker was a well known resident of this place coming here in April 1927, from Remer, and had been employed in the local mills. He was a son of James Baker, and was born in Neenah, Wis., August 21st, 1875. On July 22nd, 1899, he married Montour, and their home was in Wisconsin until they moved to Aitkin. He was a member of the St. James Catholic church and the Loyal Order of Moose..

Eight children were born in the family, all of whom survive and seven were at home for their father’s funeral. They are five sons and three daughters, Howard of Rhinelander, Wis.; Clyde in the U. S. Marines; Paul of Whiting, Ind.; Mrs., Chris Paulus (Bernice) of Aitkin; Mrs. Chas. Reed (Marie) Whiting, Ind.; Charles, Meyers Falls, Wash.; David of Schley, Minn.; Lorraine of Whiting, Ind. Also four brothers and five sisters.

Relatives coming from Minneapolis were: Mr. and Mrs. John Baker and son Roger, Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Baker, David Baker, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Mckeegan and daughter Rosemary, Miss Laura Baker, and Mrs. Roy Gustafson. Mrs. Albert Davel and son Lawrence and Mrs. A. Leatherdale of Loyal, Wis., Mr. and Mrs. Howard Baker and daughter arrived last Monday morning from Rhinelander. On Tuesday Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Reed, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Baker, Miss Lorraine Baker, and Marshall Roll, arrived from Whiting. Chris Paulas from Havre, Mont., and David Baker from Schley came Sunday. Charles Baker reached here from the west on Wednesday morning.

Pall bearers were Henry Weber, Paul Lovegren, Walter Deuermeyer, Roy Larson, Emery Arnold and Dick Flood.
