Ewers, William Edwin (6 Dec. 1881 - 13 April 1939)

William Edwin Ewers, 57, was born December 6, 1881, in Richland County, Wisconsin, the son of Benjamin and Rebecca Ewers. Mr. Ewers grew to manhood there and did contracting carpenter work with his father and brothers.

On January 17, 1918, at the age of 36, Mr. Ewers enlisted in the United States Army where she served for 21 months as soldier and sergeant. After his discharge on July 28, 1919, at Newport News, Va., he returned to his home for a short time, taking up his old trade and working with members of the family.

In the spring of 1920 he came to Clark County where he worked for a time on the farm of his brother-in-law in the township of York. From the town of York, Mr. Ewers moved to Iowa where he again worked at his trade.

In the spring of 1923 he returned to the farm in York where in 1925 he married Mrs. Lula Savage. They lived on the farm until the following spring at which time they moved to Neillsville where they have since lived, Mr. Ewers being a city employee most of the time.

On March 20, he was taken ill while at work and was brought home by a friend, Mr. Hemp, city clerk. When the doctor was summoned he advised that Mr. Ewers make immediate plans for being entered in the Madison hospital for treatment.

Last Wednesday his wife, son and daughter visited him, at the hospital, returning home with news that he was much better and planned to returned home for a short time in about two weeks. They returned home about 1:30 feeling confident that he would be with them in a short time. At 6:30 a.m. the following morning, April 13, word was received from Madison that Mr. Ewers became very ill during the night and had passed away early that morning.

Deceased leaves many close friends who know him to be a home-loving and trustworthy friend, husband and father.

Mr. Ewers was a member of the American Legion, Otto A. Haugen Post No. 73, of which he was justly proud, enjoying the comradeship of the fellow members to the utmost, most of them being friends he had known since first taking residence in the city.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and two sisters. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lula Ewers, his son, William, Jr., aged 12, and four step-daughters: Beaulah, Mrs. Roman Pscheidt, Neillsville; Mrs. Theodore Wallace, Neillsville; Mrs. Harvey Sinclair, Dubuque, Iowa; and Norene Savage, at home. Other survives are three brothers: Neil, Centralia, Ill.; Elvert, Richland County; and Archillis, address unknown; two sisters, Mary, Mrs. Earl Ewers, and Gertrude, Mrs. Ernest Kelsey of Colorado and Iowa.

The pallbearers were members of the city crew with whom he has worked for many years.

Funeral services were held from the Schiller Funeral home and the Methodist church, conducted by the Rev. E. P. Stone. Members of the American Legion Post, formed an honor guard at the grave, a firing squad giving the funeral volley and taps were sounded.
